As a practice that promotes preventive dentistry, we’ll always do everything we can to save a tooth, but there are some cases where tooth extraction is necessary.

Why do I need a tooth extraction?

We may decide that a tooth is in need of extraction due to decay or damage that we cannot fix. You may also need an extraction due to infection of the dental pulp, gum disease, or overcrowding of the mouth. In some cases, we may also have to extract a wisdom tooth that has become infected or impacted, or even baby teeth that haven’t fallen out by the time adult teeth erupt.

What is the treatment for tooth extraction like?

We understand that the prospect of tooth extraction can be nerve wracking and worrying for many of our patients. However, with our kind, compassionate and highly experienced team, there is no reason to feel nervous about this or any treatment.

In most cases, we will apply local anaesthetic to the area so that you do not feel anything while the treatment is happening.

Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, we will gently widen the socket and carefully loosen and remove the tooth in question before thoroughly cleaning the treated area. In some cases, stitches might be administered to aid in the healing of the area.

What happens after?

We will of course, go over all your after-care needs with you at the time, but you will need to avoid hot and cold drinks for a while as the area will be particularly sensitive. Once the anaesthetic has worn off, you should expect to feel some pain and discomfort. Painkillers such as ibuprofen and paracetamol should help with this.
