At Clocktower Dental Surgery, our compassionate, highly informed team is dedicated to and passionate about preventative dentistry.

What is preventative dentistry?

Preventative dentistry forms the foundation of our care provision here at Clocktower Dental Surgery. It is about protecting and promoting your oral health well into the future so that we can help ensure your long-term health. This in turn can help avoid and minimise the need for invasive or complex treatments wherever possible.

Preventative dentistry takes many different forms, and in order to be successful must be undertaken by you, the patient, as well as by our dentists and dental hygiene team. It is about us working together to find the day-to-day at-home care plan that works for you, and supporting your endeavours with thorough examinations and regular hygiene appointments.

While every preventative care plan will look different according to the patient, most will include some or all of the following:

  • At-home care: our team of dentists and dental hygienists can help you build an at-home oral healthcare plan that works for you. We recommend brushing with a fluoride toothpaste for two minutes twice daily as well as flossing regularly to all our patients. We’re also able to build more bespoke care plans that are unique to you and your oral healthcare needs and history.
  • Dental examinations: regular visits to us here at Clocktower Dental Surgery will help our highly trained and welcoming team identify and diagnose any problems or issues early on. This can help minimise the amount of treatment needed and allow us to prevent some problems from occurring.
  • Dental hygienist visits: we consider visits to the hygienist to be an integral part of our preventative care provision. Your dental hygienist can help build an at-home care routine and may well offer advice regarding diet and lifestyle that could be having an adverse effect on your oral health. These visits are also important for helping to prevent and diagnose periodontal or gum disease.
  • Fluoride treatments: we may well recommend fluoride treatments as they can help stop plaque and bacteria from destroying the enamel of the tooth, which in turn can lead to tooth decay. We will be able to identify whether you might benefit from such treatments at your regular dental visits with us.
  • X-rays: there will be some instances in which we use X-rays to help us diagnose and determine whether any further treatment or action is needed. X-rays can help us identify issues such as tooth decay, bone deterioration, gum infections, and abscessed wisdom teeth.
  • Dental sealants: we often recommend dental sealants to help protect the teeth from tiny abrasions that can lead to tooth decay. Dental sealants are simply thin plastic shields that are applied to any molars that we may have identified as being at high risk for decay.
  • Fissure sealants: fissure sealants are also designed to help minimise the risk of decay in the back teeth. Applied in droplet form, they close up any tiny holes that might be present in the back teeth, thereby preventing food and bacteria from lodging and forming there.
